2023 - Vesak Day Ceremony at Nan Hai Fei Lai Guan Yin Monastery, Singapore.
Singapore Nan Hai Fei Lai Guan Yin Monastery celebrated the Vesak Day Ceremony on June 02, 2023, under the leadership of Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Shi Miao Xian, Abbess of the monastery & also the Founder of Manjusri Library, a subsidiary of the monastery. Vesak Day is regarded as the most important day to the Buddhists. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment and Nirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha on the same day. Vesak Day means “full moon”. The “full moon” symbolizes the celebration of the Buddha’s complete qualities of wisdom, compassion and skillful means. May the light of Buddha’s teachings illuminates the world, and all living beings in the six realms be aspired to develop those qualities and attain enlightenment.
The Message From The Abbess
Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Shi Miao Xian shares that: The Singapore Nan Hai Fei Lai Guan Yin Monastery was founded in 1923. The external appearance of the monastery depicts a blend of traditional Chinese temple and Chinese Cultural architecture style. The small and solemn monastery creates a calming ambience in the midst of buzzing Geylang, Singapore. The monastery’s name “Nan Hai Fei Lai” is named after Guan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion, who arrived to Singapore all the way from Putuo Island in Zhejiang Province, China by the South China Sea.
We recite the Diamond Sutra every Sunday. All classes and programmes offered by the monastery and the library have a common objective of infusing the Buddhist way of cultivation into the conduct of our daily lives. Let me share some examples of this – to accept and be kind to ourselves, to constantly reflect and re-align ourselves, to have the spirit of compassion guiding our mannerism, speech and the way we conduct ourselves. I hope all Buddhists are inspired to put into practice all that they have learnt about compassion so that our workplace, homes, schools and society is embraced by the teachings of the Buddha. It is hopeful that the actualization of these learnings, one would permeate this world with peace and love. Let us follow the Noble teaching of the Buddha and it will be greatest respect and gratitude to our Great Teacher, the Buddha.
