Buddhism Awards (OWBA)
2018 Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards (OWBA) Ceremony held at the International Women’s Meditation Center in Rayong, Thailand on March 07 – 11, 2018. In 2018, totally 23 women from around the world will be honored for their exceptional contributions to Buddhism. As a result, that was the 17th year organized this event. Meanwhile, OWBA was held at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok for 4 consecutive years. Therefore, Outstanding Buddhism Awards Thailand, it enters the grassroots and is an international movement empowering Buddhist Woman. In 2018 Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards Ceremony organized under the leadership by the President of the Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards, Abbess of the International Women’s Meditation Center Foundation in Thailand, Senior Consultant of Mettavalokanaya International Buddhist Magazine and Bhikkhunis International Buddhist Magazine, Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Dr. Lee.
The event supported by President of the Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards (OWBA), Honorary President of the Chinese Character Education Promotion Association, Deputy President of the World Alliance of Buddhists (WAB) and Chairman of Women Development Committee, The Former President of Chinese Young Buddhist Association in Taiwan (CYBA), Vice of President International Women Meditation Center Foundation, International Chairman & Coordinator of Mahasanghadana in Taiwan, Founder of First Merits Goodness Awards Taiwan and Other Countries & Dignified Adviser of Mettavalokanaya International Buddhist Magazine and Bhikkhunis International Buddhist Magazine, Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Dr. Ming Yu.
Events
The organizing committee decided to be held Tzu Chi Meditation Hall Opening Ceremony, Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards, Buddhism & Psychology Workshop & Tour of Samed Island activities on the occasion. Because, this year supporting and co-operating organizations are International Women’s Meditation Center Foundation, Global Buddhist Bhikkhuni Association, Chinese Young Buddhist Association, Chinese Buddhist Bhikkhuni Association, Tzu Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation, Thai Maechee Institute, Tann Phunkamon Wongsawat Foundation, Anatta Foundation, Buddha Satri Foundation & Thai Nuns’ Organizational & Development Group.
Establishment
Two Buddhist nuns, Thai Bhikkhuni Rattanavali and American Bhikkhuni Dr. Lee, got the idea to develop an award in honor of Buddhist women’s accomplishments on the United Nation’s International Women’s Day. Next, according to this idea arose in March 2001 after the nuns attended two events. First, (1) The Outstanding Women’s Awards in Thailand organized by the Gender and Development Research Institute and, (2) an invited speech offered by Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Dr. Lee at the United Nations Auditorium in honor of International Women’s Day on 8 March 2001.
